Defense Budget Cuts and Employment Adjustments

Authors: Linda Levine, Specialist in Labor Economics

Abstract: Who actually would be adversely affected by defense budget cuts cannot be determined without knowing, among other things, the ultimate distribution of the cuts across the various defense spending categories. It is possible, however, to examine the extent to which employment by industry, occupation, and state is "dependent" upon defense expenditures and from this information develop ideas about who might be susceptible to disruptions prompted by military budget cuts. As used in this report, defense-dependency means that a relatively large share of employment in an industry, occupation, or state results either directly or indirectly from defense expenditures
