WELFARE REFORM: TIME LIMITS UNDER TANF (TEMPORARY ASSISTANCE FOR NEEDY FAMILIES)

Authors: Gene Falk and Courtney Schroeder, Education and Public Welfare Division

Abstract: The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Program established a 5-year time limit on federally funded welfare receipt. Though TANF has a national time limit, states have flexibility in implementing time limits. This report discusses the federal TANF time limit and the time limits established in state welfare programs. It also examines the available research on the implications of time limits.
